Durand has been an artist-blacksmith for 40 years, beginning in an abandoned cowshed in the suburbs of Slaterville Springs. He studied with master smith Frank Turley in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has shown in galleries and prestigious shows throughout the Northeast.

His work at Cornell University includes the three gates at Minns Garden; wall and post lanterns on the front of Willard Straight Hall; and the large gate at the bottom of the Cascadilla Gorge trail. Elsewhere, he has a sculpture on the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, England, as well as pieces at the Women’s Rights national park (Seneca Falls, NY); and historic Great Camp Sagamore in the Adirondack Park (NY); and in many private collections. At work daily in his North Mecklenburg shop, he regularly turns out work that is much in demand, from farm repairs to custom home and garden accessories.
